What It’s Like Using The Beachwaver With One Hand
By Campus Wave ambassador, Ellie Johnson
My name is Ellie and I have one hand. I lost my left hand when I was 8 years old from an accident in Oregon. Thankfully, losing my hand didn’t stop me from anything. I was able to play basketball soon after, got into volleyball, and was able to do anything and everything with one hand.
Except, the only thing I still couldn’t do until I had heard about Beachwaver back in April of 2020 was curling my hair. All through middle school, high school, and even my first/two years of college, I constantly had my sister and friends curl my hair. Although it was very nice having them curl my hair, it definitely was irritating having the idea in my mind that I’ll never be able to curl my hair and that I will always have to rely on my sister/friends to curl my hair. After doing so much research on automobile curling irons, I can across Beachwaver on Instagram. Although I was hesitant about purchasing one because of the thought of not being able to learn how to use it one handed since I couldn’t find a tutorial of someone using the curling iron with one hand, I decided to buy one anyways.
You guys, the minute the curling iron arrived, I still remember to this day, running to grab my package and had tried it out immediately. I was in absolutely disbelief and shock with how will this product was. I had no issues at all and learned very quickly how to use it. I remembered reaching out to Beachwaver and telling them how thrilled I was about their product and how my life literally changed in that moment. From there I was introduced to the Campus Wave program in which I applied this August.
With time and practice, I have finally been able to achieve the look I’ve been wanting. Now, I no longer have anyone curl my hair and I am able to curl my hair one handed! It used to take me an hour to curl my hair, but with lots of practice and patience I’m able to curl my hair in just 15 minutes. Anyone who is interested in purchasing a Beachwaver curling iron, I highly recommend. Super easy to learn and so user friendly even for those who may have one hand.
How I Curl my hair one handed:
I like to have my hair parted down the middle
From there, I split my hair into two sections
I put a pony tail on one side of my hair (kind of like a piggy tail but only one)
I then section the hair that I’m working on into three sections
I leave the first section out so I can curl and pin my other two sections using a clamp
Starting with the bottom section, I grab 1inch sections from the back of my head and start curling
When I curl, I use my left “nub ” since I don’t have a left hand to hold my hair up so I can place the clamp around my hair
If I am working on the right side of my hair, I have the clamp facing me and since I have one hand the clamp is facing down since it is the easiest way for me to get the clamp on my hair
Once my hair is on the clamp, I hold the curling iron vertical and press the arrow away from my face
The iron does all the work for me and all I have left is to release the curls by letting go of the clamp with my right hand
I continue this process with the relaxing of my hair on the right side going one section at a time
Once I’m done with the right side, I then start with my left side
I section my hair into 3 sections like I did earlier
Instead of using a clamp to secure the sections I’m not working on, I have to create a bun use a pony tail
I start by grabbing 1inch section of the bottom section of my hair by using my “nub” to hold the hair in place while I place it in the clamp
This time, the clamp is facing up since I found that’s the easiest for me with one hand
Once the clamp is on, I hold the curling iron vertical
I then press the bottom away from my face and let it do its job
I then release the clamp and move downwards so that my hair is curled
I continue this same process with the rest of my left side
Just like that, I’ve finished curling my hair with one hand!
