Holiday Hair Tips From Celebrity Hairdresser Sarah Potempa

With the holidays right around the corner, it’s time to elevate your everyday hair routine. There’s no better time than the holidays to try your hand at some glamorous hairstyles and accessories. Below, we’re sharing the best holiday hair tips from celebrity hairdresser and inventor of the Beachwaver, Sarah Potempa.

1. Old Hollywood Glam

You can never go wrong with a deep side part and Veronica Lake inspired old Hollywood waves.  Sarah says “Imagine you’re going to the Oscars or the Golden Globes — not everybody gets to do that so I feel like the holidays can be a version of that in your own life.” She recommends using the Reparative line in the shower and wrapping your hair in a T-Tee Towel to create a smooth base for you style. Then, create a deep side part before drying your hair with your Pro Dry then use your Beachwaver in sections to mimic a hot roller set. “I personally like to roll it under then clip it at the base and allow it to cool and then when you brush it out you get beautiful old Hollywood 1940’s waves.” You could also get the same look with a S.75 Beachwaver for a tighter 1920’s inspired curl.

2. Accessorize

Sarah loves a good DIY hair accessory. She has used fun ribbons and scarves to tie around a low bun to create a chic look. Headbands are also a great way to elevate your style if your outfit calls for it. But your accessories don’t have to be limited to your hair, “Sometimes earrings can be your accessory. If you’re going to do the side part glamorous wave and you don’t really want to put anything in your hair, getting a statement earring can balance it out to almost feel like hair jewelry.”

3. Create the Perfect Base

In the wintertime, it is so important to protect your hair, as it is likely being heat styled more than usual. “The Reparative line is really essential for having really shiny, beautiful hair,” Sarah shares. Coconut oil is also a favorite of hers to act as a DIY hair mask to keep your hair moisturized. She also stresses the importance of a good blow-dryer like the Pro Dry, which has adjustable heat settings and a cool-shot button to close the cuticle and add shine. In summer you can let your hair air dry outside, but it is so important to not leave the house with wet hair in winter.

4. Practice Makes Perfect

If you’re trying a new style, practice with friends to ensure you get it right. Sarah recommends “Watch some tutorials first and do it on a night you don’t have a big party or event to go to so you can practice and know how long it’ll take you and you can perfect it.” A high Beachwaved ponytail is another great style if you’re low on time.

5. Invest In A Good Brush

The Mini On Set Pro Brush is a purse essential for Sarah in the winter when our hair often gets tangled in scarves and hats. Having this mini sized brush on hand ensures you’ll never have a hair out of place.
